Rosemary is an old symbol of remembrance. Like many sweet-smelling herbs, it has a history of use in burial rites, distributed to mourners or placed on a grave.
It is famously referenced in several Shakespeare plays, such as Ophelia's line in Hamlet: "There's rosemary, that's for remembrance. Pray you, love, remember." Centuries later, rosemary would be an emblem of memory in the Victorian Language of Flowers.
In England, rosemary was associated with memory in folk medicine. In the 1600s it was recommended to drink rosemary in wine to quicken the brain and "reduce stupidness." In more recent years, some have a tradition of giving students a sprig of rosemary to take with them to an exam.
This pendant is a casting of a real sprig of rosemary from my garden. Each pendant is totally unique, made with a different specimen.
Pendant size: 30-40mm tall
Chain length: 24 inches
Materials
This necklace is made entirely of sterling silver. Sterling silver is an alloy of 92.5% silver with 7.5% copper, which is added to make the metal more durable. There is no outer plating- the metal can be polished over and over for a lifetime.
