This pendant is a replica of an artifact found at the archaeological site of Birka, in Sweden. It's a pendant that would have been worn by someone in the 9th-10th century, during the Viking age.
If there is any meaning behind it, that part remains a mystery. It may be intended to represent something, or it may just be an abstract design like a lot of jewelry.
I came across a picture of it, and the field notes of the archaeologist who found it in the 1870s, and I decided to make my own version. This pendant was carved freehand out of wax and then cast in sterling silver.
The original is held at the Swedish History Museum.
Pendant size: 27mm tall, 20mm wide
Chain length: 18 inches
Materials
This necklace is made entirely of sterling silver. Sterling silver is an alloy of 92.5% silver with 7.5% copper, which is added to make the metal more durable. There is no outer plating- the metal can be polished over and over for a lifetime.
