This necklace is a reproduction of a pendant found in a Viking grave. It was excavated from Birka, an archaeological site in Sweden, in the 1870s. I've included a picture of the journal of the archaeologist who first found it!
It is not entirely clear if it's meant to represent anything- it's likely just a pretty abstract design.
The original pendant was made sometime between 750 and 980 AD. The Vikings used silver for currency, but they also made vast amounts of silver jewelry. They had a tradition of burying their silver in hoards, which means a lot of it was left behind for future generations to appreciate! This piece caught my eye when I was looking through pictures of the Birka excavation, and I thought it was a beautiful and graceful design.
I made the reproduction by carving the design in clay and then casting it in sterling silver. There is a satisfying weight to this pendant!
